Giving is to a Christian as singing is to the birds of the air. It is part of the new nature. The Bible is filled with illustrations of those who gave to the service of Christ, to special projects, or to the saints. The Bible commands giving in strong terms. The principle that is more blessed to give than to receive is based on God’s desire to bring His nature forth in His children.
God has always made it possible for His people to give. The tithe is a symbol of ownership. Any believer who sets aside 10% of his income for God’s work is in essence saying that all he has belongs to God. God has always had a place to receive the tithe. Israel had the tabernacle, then the temple. The church is the depository, “storehouse“ for God’s people in this day of grace.
Giving the tithe on a weekly basis is a simple matter. Figure your total income before deductions and take 10% for the tithe. Love offerings given after the tithe are a bit different and require prayer and special leading by the Holy Spirit. There are so many places available for love gifts. Missions, building programs, special needs, bus ministry, and many other areas are worthwhile for offerings.
The end result of a good, well-planned life of stewardship will be blessings for you and others for time and eternity. Start today.
“I have held many things in my hands, and I have lost them all. But whatever I have placed in God’s hands, that I still possess.” Martin Luther (1483-1546)
